Augmented reality, that’s the technical term for the overly addictive technologic marvel now more famously known as Pokémon GO. Since its release only about a month ago, Pokémon GO has now become one of the fastest growing mobile games of all time. Needless to say, Pokémon GO has literally taken the world by storm leaving countless of civilians – young and old – staring into their mobile screens, scouting the terrain for their next possible catch. Augmented reality, according to studies can become highly addictive to us humans with researchers saying that, “Augmented reality does not separate the user from his reality but instead uses it and realistically transforms it, which can cause a high degree of curiosity and surprise in its users.” It also helps that the game itself is played on your smartphones which most countries consider a necessity now as opposed to it being a luxury.
Being Pokémon fans ourselves, and with the upcoming release of the hit game here in Asia, haven’t you ever wondered what it would be like to come across these marvellous little creatures all over Baguio? Imagine an encounter with a Snorlax at Good Taste, or watching a Ponyta run with the horses at Mines View, or diving for a Lapras at Burnham Lake – now that would make an interesting story.
That being said, the clever game mechanics of Pokémon GO which forces its players explore and interact with their surroundings bringing something old and familiar which most people share memories of in their childhood, and coupling that with the ability to connect and share these experiences through the technology unavailable during their times, leaves us with no question as to why Pokémon GO has become the hit game of the summer and most probably for years to come.
