BEYOND THE BLOCK

BEYOND THE BLOCK: A Film on the History of Philippine Hip-hop Dance Culture

The Philippines has quickly become a powerhouse in the dance industry for a short span of years. A number of Filipino hip-hop dance groups have already established their name in the international dance scene. The Philippine All Stars, The Crew, The A-Team and FMD Extreme; these are just a few of the names that made the Philippines a force to reckoned with in international dance tilts.

With more and more individuals, especially the young generation, joining the hip-hop dance culture in the country within the past few years, it is extremely necessary to create a way to properly educate them as future bearers of the culture. There is the need to explain the history and to give respect and gratitude to the people who established the culture on Philippine soil.

Ricky Carranza, a dancer/choreographer and a self-taught film-maker, addresses this need through his film, Beyond the Block. This 20 years in the making movie aims to show how the hip hop dance culture grew and developed in the Philippines and the people vital to its advancement. More importantly, how the dance culture changed the lives of people.

The film will have its Baguio screening at the Function Hall of the YMCA building located at Upper Session Road on March 6, 3:00-5:30 PM for P150. This is also inclusive of a 4-hour workshop by Sir Jay Mastah, Philippines’ oldest active bboy, and Sir Ricky Carranza, the film maker who is also a popping/locking legend. The workshop will be held on March 5 (Saturday) 1:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon at Sunshine Park.
