Visita Iglesia – When In Baguio

Our country is known as the only Christian nation in Asia with at least 70% of the current population as Roman Catholic. As we celebrate the lenten season particulary the “Holy Week” a time wherein the Roman Catholics use as a time of fasting, repentance, self-examination and a reminder of the suffering and miracles of Jesus Christ.

A particular or notable tradition is the “Visita Iglesia” also known as the Seven Churches Visitation. It is an ancient Catholic tradition wherein devotees would visit seven churches and for some fourteen on either Maundy Thursday or Good Friday. Devotees would then recite the Stations of the Cross to which it may vary based on the tradition of the family or the community.

An offering is usually given at each church as a form of almsgiving although for the others an opportunity for sightseeing.

As a way to promote the tradition and culture of the Catholic Church. Here is a list of 15 churches/chapels/parishes that you might consider visiting. You may opt to do seven or fourteen but at the end of the day your faith and preference would be the one to decide.

Visit and Pray the Church as a means to celebrate the life and death of Christ. Hopefully, not just to post something on your social media. Faith is subjective and may vary from one person to another but let us not use faith to boast or make us look good on the world of the internet.
